EOS Lip Balm, The New Favorite

About a decade ago, the co-founders of EOS (Evolution of Smooth) decided to tackle the unimaginative lip balm market. Sanjiv Mehra, Jonathan Teller and Craig Dubitsky began brainstorming about how to rock the lip balm world and wake up the senses with an exciting, new lip balm.  Although men use lip balm too, they found the majority of lip balm users were women, so they targeted their delightful product to stylish, millennial women. The in depth details of how this exciting company began are intriguing.

They challenged the tired, cylindrical shape of every other available lip balm and brought in a clay artist to create different shapes. They settled on the pastel-colored, round orbs now found in millions of purses and pockets worldwide. Pairing that eye-catching design with their yummy flavors made them a lip balm force to be reckoned with.

Smart, focused marketing got the attention of their target market, and a reasonable cost of around $3 made EOS lip balm sell like crazy! First they sold at Walgreens, then Kohls, Target, Ulta and soon afterwards you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing those pretty EOS lip balms. Currently selling over a million units a week, EOS is the second-ranking lip balm seller, after Burt’s Bees.

With EOS, using lip balm went from a boring thing to a fun thing, which does exactly what their tagline says, “The lip balm that makes you smile.”

2017 Areas To Watch When Investing

When it comes to making critical decisions on investing, most investors seek answers to two questions: what risks are involved, and what are the opportunities on this investment. Passive index funds, for example, typically, have lower management fees and taxation than active managed funds, such as mutual funds where investors seek a better return by out performing the market.

However, data collected from surveys has shown that over a thousand investors knew in 2016 that “index funds expose them to 100 percent of the volatility and losses during market downturns,” says chairman and CEO of Capital Group, Timothy D. Armour (Tim Armour), on CNBC, Feb. 27, 2017. Armour continues to say that in good and bad markets, Capital Group’s average index benchmarks percentage points were above index benchmarks after the firm’s fund expenses at 1.47.

Tim Armour became chairman of Capital Group in 2015, but Capital Group has been committed to investors for over eight decades.

“Throughout its history, the true strength of Capital Group lies not in an individual, but in the collective talents of all our associates who are aligned behind our mission to deliver superior, long-term investment results to our investors and clients, Armour says July 28, 2015 on the company’s website.

Armour has over 30 years of investment experience with Capital Group, and first began with the firm in Capital Group’s, The Associates Program. In his earlier years, he was an analyst in equity investment and performed telecommunications with service firms not only in the United States, but globally as well. Currently, Armour is an equity portfolio manager at Capital Group in Los Angeles, California, in addition to the firm’s CEO and chairman.

Interest rates and corporate earnings are areas to watch in 2017, says Armour to Jody Johnson on Capital Ideas, Jan. 3, 2017.

Betsy DeVos; Bring About Educational Reforms Using Philanthropy

Elisabeth Dee “Betsy” DeVos was born in Holland, Michigan in 1958. She is a businesswoman, activist, and philanthropist with proven leadership and advocacy track record in education, business, and politics.

She currently serves as the 11th U.S Secretary for Education in the Trump administration.

With over 35 years of experience in politics, Betsy DeVos is a staunch advocate for the promotion of school choice and quality education for all. Today, she concentrates her political ventures on the advancement of educational options.

She has been a leader in advocating for educational reforms in the U.S by breaking down institutional barriers. This creates an enabling environment where individuals are offered the opportunity to thrive.

Betsy DeVos attended the Holland Christian High School and then went on to advance her education, where she graduated with a B.A in business economics.

She set off her political career by volunteering for the sitting president in 1976. After this period, she started participating in local state Party as a precinct delegate.

Betsy DeVos participated on the panel for the National Republican Committee for Michigan between 1992 and 1997. This has enabled her to serve twice as the Michigan Republican Party chairwoman.

She married her husband, Dick DeVos, an entrepreneur, and active philanthropist. The two have a long-standing commitment to conservative political and social causes. To date, they have given over $139 million in charitable donations, as well as political committees and candidates.

She is the former chairwoman of the Windquest Group, an investment management firm she started with her husband, based in Michigan.

In 1989, they launched the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation, aimed at nurturing leadership and wholesome societal transformation by focusing on thematic areas such as the arts, community, education, justice, and leadership.

To this end, the Foundation has supported various organizations including the Center for Individual Rights, the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, Focus on the Family, and Michigan’s Pregnancy Resource Center. The foundation has also offered support to art endeavors such as the DeVos Institute of Arts Management and ArtPrize. Visit their foundation at dbdvfoundation.org

Betsy DeVos has also served on the boards of several philanthropic causes. Owing to her commitment to social advancement, Betsy has offered assistant to players in the health sector, free market think tanks, Christian organizations, and most importantly, the education sector.

She advocates for education in the U.S to be opened for-profit institutions that will offer parents more choice. The use of school vouchers will enable students to study in private schools using public sector funding.

To support this cause, she founded All Children Matter PAC in 2003. This was to be used to promote school vouchers and tax credits for those who offer their support, as well as to offer private school scholarships.

Betsy DeVos has also partnered with other organizations such as the Foundation for Excellence in Education, the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Program, and much more in her advocacy for educational and social change.

Know All About Dick DeVos And His Philanthropy

Dick DeVos is not new to the world of philanthropy. His father, Rick DeVos was the founder of Amway. Rick along with his four grown-up children was known to funnel his funds into charity.

Dick DeVos is known for donating his money without having any strings attached to it. This means that he does not like to interfere or know how that money is being spent. Once he earmarks a project, he moves ahead on it. But he would always like to be associated with something that he feels will make a difference to the concerned people.

One example can be seen about a gift to Spectrum Health Foundation. The aim was to underwrite recruiting of the top physician of the country who was also a researcher in cases of childhood cancers that included neuroblastoma. Dick DeVos noted that this was a philanthropic investment that provided him with remarkable results. This is because the survival rate of those who were being treated for the childhood brain cancer increased substantially at the Helen DeVos’ Children’s Hospital.

Another example can be regarding the financial support that has been given since a long time to the popular mega church Willow Creek in Chicago. It is a part of his commitment towards fostering leadership development. There was a donation of $1 million in 2013. This was meant to support the global leadership summit of the church. It was attended by professionals, government, as well as business and church leaders from all around the world. In fact, the previous annual conference had seen philanthropist Melinda Gates as one of the speakers.

Dick DeVos consults his wife as well as their children about where to donate their money. This is the reason why their foundation has added “family” to reflect that approach.

Their kids know where their heart is. Hence Dick DeVos gets a fresh perspective from them about places where he should be investing still more. The kids even tell him where they feel that his proposed contributions are falling short.

His kids can look at him and say that the money is not nearly enough to make a difference. He believes that they are always right. Hence Dick DeVos feels that he can do more and he does that.

Dick DeVos launched the first aviation-themed charter school of the country five years back. This was at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. He is the patron of the West Michigan Aviation Academy. Hence his connections can turn the annual fundraiser of the schools into a gala event. This leads to top class speakers coming to the school. Hence Dick DeVos does much more than writing checks for charity.
